Description

2021 is the transition year of the American Silver Eagle. Coins struck early in the year carry John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle and shield (Type 1); from mid-2021 the US Mint switched to Emily Damstra’s eagle landing with an oak branch (Type 2), together with a refreshed version of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty.

Each coin is struck by the United States Mint from one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver, carries a $1 face value, measures 40.6 mm across and has a reeded edge. Coins are sold in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, as struck for bullion: they are not third-party graded and do not come in a graded holder.

Both versions contain the same one troy ounce of silver and are priced the same here. Unless the listing names a type, your 2021 coins may be either type. Our guide to Type 1 and Type 2 explains how to tell them apart.

Questions about the 2021 Silver Eagle

Will I receive a Type 1 or a Type 2 coin?

Unless this listing names a type, 2021 coins ship from current stock and may be either type. Both hold one troy ounce of 0.999 silver.

How can I tell Type 1 from Type 2?

Look at the reverse. Type 1 shows a heraldic eagle behind a shield; Type 2 shows an eagle coming in to land with an oak branch in its talons.
